Extremity: Artist
One of my biggest complaints about most graphic novels I have read lately is that they move too fast. It’s like the creators are impatient to get to the important scenes. It’s all about action and not character building. The problem with that kind of story telling is that you, as the reader, aren’t given enough time to care about the characters. So, once the characters get to the action there aren’t any stakes because you don’t particularly care what happens to them. The big moments don’t feel big if they come too fast.
This is not the case with Extremity by Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer. I absolutely love the pace. It took an entire volume to get where most would have taken a few pages to get. It gave us time to get to know all of the characters and really flesh out why they make the decisions they make, so once the story really begins (in the last couple pages) you are invested and you care what happens to each of them.
I’ve always been a sucker for post-apocalyptical worlds, and the Mad Max/Native American influences fit really well with this alien world. Plus the art is so pretty.
I can’t wait to read more!
