Scythe Rise of Fenris
Scythe is one of the two board games that I purchased personally before we opened. I got Firefly for me and Scythe for David’s birthday (ok it was for me as well, but two birds with one stone, right?) And then life got in the way and we opened the Geekhouse and both Firefly and Scythe ended up in the Library. It wasn’t until last year that I was finally able to break it open and play it.
I loved it. I love the asymetrical factions, the different starting locations, and of course the art. I never won, but I enjoyed it. And to have a game that you enjoy even when you lose is a sign of a good game.
We added Invaders from Afar and the Wind Gambit and so it was pretty much a no brainer to add Rise of Fenris and get a group together to try it out.
Scythe is one of those games that rewards multiple plays. You get really comfortable with your faction’s powers and what to do with your location tiles and what your neighbor’s can and can’t do. So, introducing a story element that allows you to spend time playing one faction is wonderful. I loved the little changes in goals for each game and the ability to add powers to factions. And without spoilers, I will admit that I got a little obsessed with a luck based side quest at the detrminet to my score for that game.
I think this would be a perfect expansion to break out during the pandemic to add a little more variation to a game that is already fun to play over and over again.
